Can my child just change the clock? Virtual clock and network time sync

How AIVI makes changing the Windows clock useless: an independent virtual clock, optional NTP sync every 30 minutes, forced lock on large drift, plus sleep/wake and boot rollback compensation — and how to clear a forced lock.

The most common bypass is rolling the system clock back. AIVI does not rely on the Windows clock: it maintains a virtual clock driven by a monotonic timer, so changing the system time does not affect slot evaluation.

Can my child get more time by changing the clock?

Yes. AIVI does not read the Windows clock for scheduling, so changing it has no effect; with network time sync on, large drift is detected and force-locked. The four layers of defence are below.

Four layers of defence

  1. Independent virtual clock: advanced by milliseconds since boot; changing the system time has no effect.
  2. Sleep/wake compensation: on wake the offline duration is compensated and the clock re-synced immediately, preventing “free time” from closing the lid.
  3. Boot rollback guard: if the system time is earlier than the recorded one, the recorded value is used.
  4. Network time sync (NTP): when enabled it calibrates every 30 minutes; drift ≤60s is stepped smoothly (forward only), drift >300s is treated as tampering and forces a lock that only the parent password clears.

How to enable network time sync

  1. 01

    Turn it on

Settings → Time Management → tick Network time sync (off by default); in the web console enable it under Dashboard → Settings → Time Management, then save and apply.

  2. 02

    Keep the device online

NTP calibration requires network access. A permanently offline PC still uses the virtual clock (still tamper-resistant) but real drift cannot be corrected.

How do I clear the forced lock caused by clock tampering?

Unlock with the parent password at the PC; the child's 110 emergency unlock also clears the NTP lock state — but only 3 times a day. If the PC is often offline and shut down, consider enabling auto shutdown after lock to avoid a drifting time base.
